Wildlife, Livestock and Human Health – is Cross Species Transmission a Major Conflict Issue?

R A Kock

Abstract

The paper provides a brief definition of the wildlife livestock human disease interface and briefly reviews some key interface diseases; anthrax, tuberculosis (TB), rinderpest, Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), rift valley fever (RVF) and trypanosomosis as an illustration of the problem. There is a discussion of the conflict issues in the livestock, trade and public health (emerging diseases) fields in relation to the interface. The paper concludes with proposals for the future direction of veterinary work at the interface.
