This study investigates the indicators of technostress and its impact on electronic resource utilization among undergraduate students at Federal University Lokoja (FUL). The population comprised 728 undergraduate students from the Library and Information Science department, from which a sample of 191 students was drawn. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests. Results indicate a significant negative relationship between technostress and electronic resource utilization (= 42.56, = 21.03). Key stressors identified include techno-overload and techno-complexity. While students demonstrated competence with general databases, proficiency declined with specialized tools like the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). The study concludes that technostress significantly hinders academic performance and resource engagement. It recommends targeted interventions, including simplified user interfaces, comprehensive digital literacy training, and institutional mental health support to mitigate these challenges.
2026-08-30T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2026 Department of Library & Information Science, Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ljisr/article/view/334112 Information behaviors of patients with sickle cell disease in sociocultural context: A fresh perspective for designing sickle cell disease information services and communication programs 2026-08-27T05:23:37+00:00 Abubakar Abdulkareem abubakarabdulkareem8@gmail.com
Sickle cell disease is a serious health problem globally. Despite efforts to reduce the burden of the disease, only a limited number of studies have examined SCD from a sociocultural perspective. This study aims at understanding information behavior of patients with sickle cell disease, using Chatman theory of information behavior as a theoretical framework to guide the investigation. This study adopted interpretative research paradigm and collected qualitative data using in-depth interview. Inductive analytical processes were used to analyze the data collected. Findings based on Chatman theory of information behavior revealed that sociocultural beliefs are the main reason for non-use of information communicated to patients with sickle cell disease. Therefore, this study recommended that for a sustained acceptance and use of information communicated to patients with sickle cell disease, there is the critical need for health policy makers and information professionals to design information program for patients with sickle cell disease based on the social and cultural Setting.
2026-08-30T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2026 Department of Library & Information Science, Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ljisr/article/view/334113 Artificial intelligence and archival practice: Transforming management, preservation, and access in the digital age 2026-08-27T05:29:36+00:00 Aliyu Muhammed’Rabiu comraderabiu@gmail.com Charity Ezinne Maxwell maxwell.charity@gmail.com
The unprecedented growth of digital information and the increasing complexity of archival collections have compelled archival institutions worldwide to explore innovative technological solutions for records management, preservation, and access. Among these emerging technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) has attracted significant attention due to its capacity to automate processes, improve efficiency, and enhance access to archival materials. This paper critically examines the role of artificial intelligence in transforming archival management, preservation, and access within contemporary archival environments. Drawing upon current literature from archival science, information studies, digital humanities, and computer science, the study investigates the opportunities, challenges, and implications of AI adoption in archives. The paper reveals that AI technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and optical character recognition, are increasingly employed to support archival appraisal, automated classification, metadata generation, digital preservation, and intelligent information retrieval. These technologies have demonstrated considerable potential in reducing processing backlogs, improving discoverability, enhancing user engagement, and facilitating large-scale digitization projects. Furthermore, AI-driven analytical tools are enabling new forms of archival research by uncovering hidden patterns and relationships within archival collections. Despite these benefits, the integration of AI into archival practice raises important ethical, legal, and professional concerns. Issues relating to algorithmic bias, transparency, accountability, privacy, authenticity, and contextual integrity challenge traditional archival principles and require careful consideration. The paper argues that while AI presents transformative opportunities for archives, its implementation must be guided by robust governance frameworks, ethical standards, and professional oversight. The study concludes that AI should be regarded as a complementary technology that augments rather than replaces the expertise of archivists. Future archival practice will depend on the successful integration of technological innovation with the enduring values of archival science, including authenticity, reliability, provenance, accountability, and equitable access.
2026-08-30T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2026 Department of Library & Information Science, Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ljisr/article/view/334114 Workplace diversity and job performance in research libraries: Evidence from Nigeria 2026-08-27T05:34:43+00:00 Yacob Haliso halisoy@babcock.edu.ng Odomero Ewomazino Omohwovo omohodomero@gmail.com Obinna Okoro okoroo@babcock.edu.ng
The job performance of library personnel is fundamental to achieving research institutes' mandates, as it promotes innovation, addresses societal challenges, and contributes to economic and industrial growth. Findings in the study show that technologies and services provided in academic libraries in NCN before the COVID-19 pandemic were: the computer, circulation service, reference service, and selective dissemination of information. Only digital resources were the innovative technology and service adopted in academic libraries in NCN as a panacea to the effects of COVID-19 and related pandemics. The study further revealed a low extent of adoption of innovative technologies and services in academic libraries in NCN as a panacea to the effects of COVID-19 and related pandemics. Additionally, the study indicated that the research output of academics in NCN is positively impacted by the adopted technology and service. The innovative technologies and services agreed for possible adoption in academic libraries in NCN as a panacea to the effects of COVID-19 and related pandemics include: online databases, social media technologies, information alert service, QR Code, natural language processing, blockchain technology, intelligent virtual assistant, among others. A recommendation made in the study, among others, was that academic library managements in NCN should, as a matter of deliberate policy, address the poor adoption of innovative technologies and services, which has revealed the weaknesses of the libraries to cater to the needs of researchers in periods of pandemics like COVID-19.
2026-08-30T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2026 Department of Library & Information Science, Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria
