Managing library and information systems in the digital world: managing resources

Abstract

This paper discusses the challenges and opportunities towards managing library and information system in relation to access the digital world’s knowledge. Academic libraries are expected to provide access to information and digital material resources available within their reach. However, the Nigerian libraries especially academic libraries are far from this ideal. This paper therefore among other identifies the inhibiting factors facing academic libraries such as funding, poor bibliographic control, poor ICT facilities and the changing roles of a professional librarian which includes the need for a set of updated and standard skills which will help in coping with the advancement of digital technology. It also brings to the fore some challenges faced by academic libraries in the pursuance of staying relevant and maintaining digital global standard. The paper concluded by admonishing librarians to be creative, self-motivated when it comes to acquiring necessary skills especially in the knowledge of digital system through ICT skills or tools and always willing to learn, in order to ameliorate the situation recommendations were made.
