Insurance institutions in pre-colonial Nigeria

M M Ogbeidi

Abstract

This paper discusses some of the dynamic institutions that served not only as credit institutions, but also as insurance institutions in pre-colonial Nigerian communities. The paper concludes that the various elements that served as insurance institutions during the period did not allow for a responsible spread of risk, although they formed the basis upon which the modem forms of insurance institutions in Nigeria were established and developed.
