Focus and Scope

Mgbakoigba welcomes original and incisive contributions engaging historical and contemporary issues relevant to the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Environmental Sciences, especially as they affect the field of African Studies. Its main emphasis is to generate and construct a new agenda for approaching history, methodology and theory in African knowledge production. Considering new frameworks for reflecting and addressing issues arising from the present context of economic, political, cultural and technological changes, the journal aims to establish a platform to revisit the grand teleological narration of progress and modernity where Africa has always been denied intellectual agency and subjectivity.  The editors seek research papers and innovative essays engaging new debates, exhibition review essays, cultural events, responses to contemporary cultural criticisms in the relevant disciplines. All work submitted are subject to peer review. All submissions must not exceed 6, 000 word papers.

Peer Review Process

(a) Every paper submitted is first scanned through by the editorial board and if it holds any promise will be sent to at least two qualified persons in the author’s discipline for blind review.

(b) The reviewers are usually any of the following: scholars of sound academic standing, members of the Editorial Advisory Board, the Journal Management Team and others identified by their specific expertise and publication profile.

(c) The reviewers usually comment on the papers’ eligibility for publication in Mgbakoigba, taking originality into account as well as the quality of research, argument, use of relevant literatures and style of writing. Each reviewer will be given not more than one month for this process.

(d) The Reviewers’ Evaluation Form will be enclosed with each manuscript for the reviewer’s guidance. It will require a reviewer to classify his/her response to a paper in any of the four categories:

  1. Acceptance with minor corrections.
  2. Acceptance with major changes.
  3. Rejection with the possibility of revision and resubmission for another issue; and
  4. Outright rejection.

(e) When the reviewer’ reports are collated, the Editor-in-Chief confirms manuscripts for publication in Mgbakoigba. In strict compliance to confidentiality ethics of blind peer review, the Editor sends back selected parts of the reports to the authors thus explicating further reasons for the journal’s acceptance or rejection of the paper and aiding the author, as the case may be, in revising/rewriting accepted papers for publication.

(f) Authors are expected to effect the required corrections and then email their final document to the Editor within the specified time.

(g) After proofs, the Editor assembles all the manuscripts into an issue with the addition of an appropriate introduction and then sends the issue to the publisher.

(h) Publication is normally expected around July or August of each year.

(i) Mgbakoigba encourages and supports new and established authors. However, in order to improve on the quality of publications, manuscripts that are unanimously recommended by at least two reviewers for substantive revision or rejection may not be published.
