Evaluation of Yield Potential, Survivability, and Morphological Traits Characterization for Progeny Selection among Cassava F1 Hybrids
Abstract
Cassava is a vital carbohydrate source and industrial crop in Sub-Saharan Africa, but its genetic improvement is hindered by limited variability information. This study evaluated 3,425 botanical seeds from six parent lines, sown in a screen house, with 1,372 seedlings transplanted to the field using an augmented design. Moderate to high survivability was recorded, with 554 plants surviving at nine months after transplanting (9 MAT); three families achieved 100% survival. Significant segregation among F₁ progenies was observed for all traits. Qualitative traits (e.g., plant vigour, root shape, pulp colour) showed high morphological differentiation, even within families. Quantitative traits revealed substantial genetic variation: fresh root yield ranged from 9.00 to 88.00 t/ha, dry matter content from 24.83% to 55.47%, and starch content from 8.90% to 49.69%. Among 105 selected progenies, genotype NR23CAP0031 outperformed all checks with the highest selection index (Si = 140.41), followed by NR23AA-P0077 (Si = 106.21) and NR23EA-P0046 (Si = 97.29). Parental lines NR87184, Gamechanger, and TMS920057 were also top performers. The study identified promising transgressive genotypes, indicating substantial yield potential and genetic diversity, providing opportunities for effective selection in subsequent breeding cycles.
