Extent of Internet Usage as a Learning Medium among Agricultural Undergraduate Students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, Nigeria
Abstract
The internet has been widely accepted as a means for enhancing learning among undergraduate students. This study seeks to know the extent to which undergraduate students utilize it for learning purposes. The study specifically ascertained the perceived effect of internet usage on their academic performance and assessed the constraints militating against the usage of the internet among undergraduate agricultural students. A stratified random sampling technique was used in dividing the population into strata, and Taro Yamme’s Formula selected a sample size of 286 respondents. Data was collected using a questionnaire and was analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics. Major findings revealed that the internet has a higher perceived effect in improving the performance of students in their examination (x3.06)̅ , and the major constraint militating internet utilization is unstable power supply (x3.15)̅ . The result from the hypothesis testing using an independent-samples t-test revealed that there is no significant difference in the mean level of use of the internet as a learning medium between 300-level and 500-level students at 5% level of significance (p<0.05). In conclusion, the study revealed that the utilization of the internet among the two levels did not differ significantly. So, the study recommends that universities should improve their internet facilities to enhance internet access among students.
