Analysis of Farmers’ Awareness and Access to Biosecurity Resources in the Management of Pig Disease Incidences in Southeast Nigeria
Abstract
The study analysed Farmer’s awareness and access level to biosecurity resources in the management of pig disease incidence in selected states of Southeast Nigeria. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select 270 respondents for the study. Data were collected from the respondents using a well-structured questionnaire and interview schedule. The results show that the majority of the respondents are aware of biosecurity measures for managing disease incidences. The respondent’s knowledge level on biosecurity measures was low, with a grand mean of 2.26. Also, the respondents recorded a low access level to biosecurity resources with a grand mean of 2.30. Ordinary Least Squares regression analysis shows that education, Training in pig farming, Membership of pig farmers association, access to veterinary/extension services, and access to capital have a significant relationship on the farmers' access level to biosecurity resources. It was concluded that pig farmers in southeast Nigeria are aware of biosecurity measures, but have low knowledge of biosecurity measures and low access levels to biosecurity resources. Farmers' mobilization for biosecurity, workshop trainings on biosecurity through agricultural extension and veterinary programmes, and provision of free or subsidized biosecurity resources were recommended to enhance pig farmers' knowledge and access to biosecurity resources.
