Assessment of the Relationship between Radio Utilization and Adoption of Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) Cultivation Practices among Farmers in Abia State, Nigeria

Abstract

The role of agricultural communication through mass media is critical to enhancing farmers’ knowledge and adoption of improved farming practices. This study investigated the relationship between radio utilization and the adoption of orange-fleshed sweet potato (OFSP) cultivation practices among farmers in Abia State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to determine the frequency at which farmers utilize radio as a source of agricultural information and to assess the impact of radio on the adoption of OFSP cultivation practices. 96 OFSP farmers were selected based on their desire to participate after being trained. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The findings revealed that 41.67% of the farmers listened to the radio daily as a source of agricultural information. Planting recorded the highest mean adoption score (x ̄ = 3.14). The Pearson correlation coefficient (r = 0.147) revealed a very weak positive relationship between radio utilization frequency and the adoption of OFSP practices, with a pvalue (p > 0.392) indicating no statistically significant relationship. This suggests that increasing the frequency of radio use alone may not necessarily enhance adoption; rather, the quality of content and farmers’ receptiveness to information may play a more crucial role. The study concludes that frequent radio access supports knowledge dissemination and adoption of improved OFSP practices but must be complemented by relevant, high-quality information. It recommends increasing the frequency and consistency of agricultural radio programs, delivering content in local languages for broader reach, and strengthening collaboration among extension agencies, media organizations, and research institutions to improve the quality and effectiveness of agricultural information dissemination.
