Influence of Liquid Organic Fertilizer on Yield and Weed Density of Celosia argentea

Abstract

Synthetic fertilizer usage in agriculture poses significant environmental challenges. Use of sustainable alternatives such as organic fertilizers is inevitable. This study investigates the influence of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF), produced from animal manure, on the yield and weed density of Celosia argentea. The result showed commencement of high odour of LOF at day five (5). Microbiological analysis of the LOF confirmed the presence of bacterial cells. Weed diversity in all treatments was profound. Fresh weed density decreased significantly at p<0.05 across all treatments, with the highest in treatment one (T1) (120 g/m2) at week 2. The density of dried weed showed a significant difference at p<0.05 with 67 g/m2 at week 6.  Leaf area varied from 35 cm2 in T4 to 115 cm2 in T6. Significant (p<0.05) increase in Celosia argentea height was recorded between T1 (2 cm) and T2 (39 cm) at week 2 and week 6.
