Abstract

This study analysed the entrepreneurial behaviour and its determinants among smallholder cassava farm households in Abia State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select 120 respondents. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The factor analysis revealed four key dimensions of entrepreneurial behaviour: innovativeness, proactiveness, risk-taking, and record/decision management, indicating a strong entrepreneurial orientation among the farmers. The regression results showed that credit amount (p<0.05), education (p<0.05), cooperative membership (p<0.05), and farm size (p<0.05) had significant positive effects on entrepreneurial behaviour. In contrast, farming experience (p<0.01) had a significant negative effect, suggesting that more experienced farmers may be less inclined towards entrepreneurial practices. The study concludes that while cassava farmers exhibit positive entrepreneurial traits, these are significantly influenced by access to finance, education, social capital, and land resources. It is recommended that government and extension agencies provide targeted training for experienced farmers and improve access to credit and cooperative societies to strengthen entrepreneurial capacity and enhance the sustainability of cassava farming households.
