Effects of Climate Change Adaptation Strategies on the Productivity of Cassava- Based Farmers in Bende Local Government Area, Abia State

Abstract

The study analyzed the effects of climate change adaptation strategies on the productivity of cassava-based farmers in Bende L.G.A, Abia State, Nigeria. The study population comprised all cassava-based farmers in Bende L.G.A, Abia State.  A multistage sampling procedure was used to select 120 respondents for the study. Data for the study were obtained from primary sources using structured questionnaires and were analyzed using means, frequencies, and percentages, Total Factor Productivity, and multiple regression models. The respondents recorded a mean production level of 1.091, attributed to the effective application of climate change adaptation measures like cover crops, early planting, and organic fertilizers. The respondents recorded a moderately high level of productivity. Age, farming experience, household size, education, farm size, and cooperative membership significantly influenced their productivity. The study recommended that government and non-governmental organizations should fund research and equip extension agents to effectively provide cassavabased farmers with the needed training assistance in combating climate change in the study area.
