Determinants of Cooperative Membership among Arable Crop Farmers in Southeast Nigeria
Abstract
The study examined the socioeconomic factors influencing cooperative membership among arable crop farmers in Southeastern Nigeria. Specifically, the study described the socioeconomic Characteristics of arable crop farmers in the study area and estimated the determinants of cooperative membership among arable crop farmers in the study area. A multi-stage random sampling procedure was adopted to select 240 respondents for the study. Data for the study were obtained using a well-structured questionnaire and interview schedule. Data were analyzed using means, frequencies, percentages, and multiple regression models. Results showed that the majority of the respondents were middle-aged (x ̄ = 48 years), experienced (x ̄ = 12 years), subsistence farmers (x ̄ = 0.42ha), had fairly large household sizes (x ̄ = 7 persons), and were males (65%). Membership of cooperative society among arable crop farmers was significantly determined by access to credit, improved farm inputs, age, marital status, education, farm size, and extension contact, emphasizing the need to strengthen these factors to enhance cooperative participation. The study therefore recommended that governments and non-governmental organizations should link cooperatives to microfinance institutions, banks, or government funding schemes that offer favorable loan terms for technology adoption and increased productivity.
