Assessment of Pesticide Residue, Heavy Metal, and Nutritional Quality of Six Different Brands of Commercially Popular Noodles from Orie-Ugba Market, Umuahia, Abia State
Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) opined that most health challenges in recent times is consequent upon consumption of contaminated food. This, therefore, necessitated the assessment of pesticide residues and heavy metals in instant noodles purchased from six different stores at Orie-Ugba market in Umuahia, Abia State. The different brand of noodles was analyzed for selected pesticide residues, heavy metals and nutritional quality using standard methods at the University of Nigeria Nsukka Central Laboratory. The results showed the presence of Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr and Cu in the noodles but the values of Pb (0.45 mg/kg) and Cr (6.30 mg/kg) were higher than permissible limit set by Codex Alimentarius Commission. Pesticide residues tested in this study were below the permissible limit. Notwithstanding this, the consumption of such contaminated noodles over a period of time could pose serious health risks to consumers since Pb and Cd have no positive biological function in the human body. Very strong positive relationship exists between Cd and Heptachlor (r= 0.85, P<0.01) and Carbofuran (r= 0.692, P<0.01)
