Factors Influencing Adoption of Wave Technologies: Empirical Evidence from North West and North East Nigeria

Abstract

Agriculture plays an important role in the economy of Nigeria; however, with high risks of natural factors like climate change, pests, and diseases, among others, posing significant threats to agricultural production, food security, and livelihoods in northern Nigeria, resulting in low yields. Therefore, the need for farmers to insure their farms against crop loss is crucial. This study examined factors affecting the adoption and intensity of Cassava Disease Management Technologies (CDMTs) in North West and North East, Nigeria. The study utilizes cross-sectional data, which was collected in 2023 from a randomly selected sample of 536 households (254 in North West and 282 in North East) using a structured questionnaire (Kobo Collect). The data collected from the sample households were analyzed using both descriptive as well as inferential analysis. The result of a double-hurdle econometrics model shows that among the explanatory variables used in the regression analysis, Farmers' decision on adoption of CDMTs was positively affected by educational level, farm size, and farming experience of the smallholder farmers. Similarly, distance to market, extension services, participation in training, caravan, and demonstration plot were also found to be significant., This study highlights the need for development interventions (researchers (Breeder), Policy makers, extension service providers, and NGOs) should aim to target such institutional and psychological factors to promote wider adoption of CDMTs to boost more cassava crop productivity through improved agrarian technology
