Effect of Drainage on Soil Chemical Properties (Soil pH and Soil Organic Matter) and their Influence on Maize Yield

Abstract

This research was conducted to quantify and compare maize yields (t/ha) in drained and nondrained marshlands, to assess and compare soil chemical properties ( pH and soil organic matter)  of drained vs non‐drained soils and how they affect yield of maize,  In this research, 10 non drained plots(NDP) have been taken from non-drained field and 10 drained plots(DP) have been taken from drained fields, all chosen plots have been cultivated in the same way but the difference in maize yield have been observed.  This research indicates that the average pH of NDP was 6.96± 0.48 (Mean ± Standard Deviation), whereas the average pH of DP reduced to 6.1± 0.3 with a difference of 0.86 due to drainage and a p-value of 0.0002 (p<0.01), which means that the difference is statistically significant. Soil pH of DP is in the suitable range of PH for maize production, but the soil pH of NDP is above the suitable range, which may cause some nutrients to be not available, and cause a difference in yield. The average of soil organic matter content of NDP decreased from 6.53± 1.48% to 4.4 ± 1.42% of DP, with a reduction of 2.13% due to drainage and a p-value of 0.0042 (p < 0.01), which means a statistically significant difference. The yield of NDP increased from 5.04 ± 0.9 t/ha to 6.41 ± 0.83 t/ha of DP.  The yield increased by 1.37t/ha due to drainage, and a p-value of 0.0024(p<0.01), which means a statistically significant difference.
