Abstract

This is a descriptive study of asymptomatic bacteriuria among antenatal women that were seen in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, Nigeria, between 1st January 2004 and 31st December 2004. Pregnant women who booked in the antenatal clinic in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital during the period of study were recruited. The results obtained were analysed using minitab statistical computer software. The prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria among the pregnant women was 8.0%. Age, parity, educational status and gestational age showed statistically significant association with asymptomatic bacteriuria. The commonest microbial organism that was isolated was Escherichia coli (74.5%). In view of the high prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria and the possible adverse obstetric outcomes, we recommend routine screening of pregnant women as currently advocated 2,7 and practiced.
