Tooth -Wear Lesions Among Patients Attending Tertiary Hospital in Benin City, Nigeria.

Abstract

Tooth wear manifest in the form of abrasion, attrition, erosion and abfraction and can affect the quality of life of the sufferer. This was a prospective study of patients who had tooth wear lesion in Benin City, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to determine the prevalence of tooth wear lesion and the contribution of the different forms of tooth wear in the study population. The diagnosis of tooth wear lesion was made through careful and thorough clinical examination and its severity was determined using the simplified tooth wear index. The prevalence of tooth wear was 11.8% affecting more middle aged males. Attrition was more predominant, affecting the occlusal and incisal surfaces of teeth more. We recommend oral hygiene advice, dietary counseling and regular dental examination for early detection
