Abstract

A survey was carried out to estimate the distribution of pastures in 30 villages in the derived savanna area of Ogun State. Ten villages were selected in each of Odeda, Abeokuta South and Abeokuta North Local Government Area. Odeda Local Government Area had the highest population of pasture plants (36.3%) followed by Abeokuta South LGA (33.8%) and Abeokuta North LGA depicted the least (29.9%). Odeda LGA also had the highest proportion of bunch forming grasses (34%) such as Pennisetum spp., Panicum spp., Andropogon spp. and browse plants (23%}, and the least proportion (10%) of sward forming grasses but equal proportion of herbaceous legumes with Abeokuta South LGA (33%). Pasture plant distribution in Abeokuta North LGA ranged from 30% for lowgrowing, sward-forming grasses to 20% for browse plants. However, Abeokuta South LGA had low growing grasses such as Cynodon dactylon, Setaria spp dominating the area with tall grasses and browse plants being 7% and 16% respectively.
