Author Guidelines
AIM AND SCOPE
The Nigerian Journal of Environment and Health (NJEH) is a peer-reviewed open-access
scholarly Journal dedicated to bridging the gap between science, practice, and policy on
Environment-Health issues with the overall goal of enhancing public health and sustainable
development in Nigeria. It is a platform for exchange of critical ideas among the academia,
industry, policy makers, regulatory agencies and other informed stakeholders on environment-
health issues in Nigeria. Relevant high quality articles dealing with international concerns are
also welcome. The Editors reserve the rights to reject, with or without input from external
reviewers, papers that do not meet these criteria or required standard.
At the present time, the NJEH operates only the online Open Access edition. Each article is
posted online as soon as it is accepted for publication by the Editor-in-Chief following the
peer-review process.
Categories of Articles
Articles are considered for publication under two major categories, viz, Science, and Policy and Practice.
Each submitted manuscripts should take one of the following forms:
Original Research Papers, which should be definitive and describe a reasonably complete investigation.
Short Communications, which should describe ideas, data or investigations that are not
completed, or for any other reason does not justify publication as a full-length paper. Short
communications should normally not exceed 2,000 words. Articles in this category will be
refereed and published faster than original papers.
Reviews
Field Reports
Letters to the editor are meant to comment to a previously published paper, or some topical
issue, and should be in the order of approximately 2,000 words. Articles in this category will be refereed and published faster than original papers.
Language for Writing
All submissions should be written in good English.
Anti-Plagiarism
All articles submitted will be checked for plagiarized texts by running them through some selected anti-plagiarism software.
Submission
Manuscripts should be prepared as Microsoft Word documents and sent as an email attachment to any of the Editors – see below. An article should be a single file containing the text, figure(s) and table(s). For instructions on Preparation of Manuscripts, see below.
Page Charge
Authors of each accepted manuscript will pay N40,000 (forty thousand naira) or its US dollar equivalence as processing and publication fees. Letter of Acceptance will be issued only after payment of the required fee. Digital Object Identifier (DOI) number will be generated and assigned to each article at the point of acceptance
Copyright
Authors are expected to sign a copyright agreement form and submit on acceptance of their
manuscript, prior to publication.
Reprints and Advertisements
Articles published in the NJEH are available for open-access. Authors are free to download reprints directly from our website.
Advertisements on events and products relevant to the subject of Environment-Health may be
accepted for placement in the Nigerian Journal of Environment and Health. The LivingScience Foundation however reserves the right to reject any advertising copy that does not align with her values and goals. Advertisers and their agencies will assume liability for the content of all advertisements and also assume responsibility for any claims arising therefrom against the publisher. Enquiries about advertising costs should be directed at the Managing Editor.
Manuscript Preparation
Manuscript should be prepared using Microsoft Word. Layout of the text should be as simple
as possible. For tables, use only one grid for each individual table and not a grid for each row,
then use tabs, not spaces, to align columns. Use the 'spell-check' and 'grammar-check'
functions of your word processor to check for errors and correct any identified error.
Sections of Manuscript
Manuscripts should contain the following major sections:
- Title page
- Abstract
- Introduction
- Materials and methods
- Results and Discussions
- Conclusion
- Acknowledgement (if any)
- References
Title Page
The page should contain the following items:
Title: Should be concise and informative.
Author(s)’ names and affiliations: Clearly indicate the given name(s) and family name(s) of the authors with their present addresses below the names. Indicate all affiliations with a lower-case
superscript letter immediately after the author's name and in front of the appropriate address. Provide the full postal address of each affiliation, including the country name and, if available, the e-mail address of each author.
Corresponding author: Clearly indicate who will handle correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, also post-publication. Ensure that the e-mail address is given and that contact details are kept up to date by the corresponding author. Contact telephone number may
also be included.
Abstract
An abstract of not more than 350 words must be supplied for all articles, except Letters to the Editor
Key words
Three to five key words describing the article should be supplied.
Tables and Figures
Tables should be placed on separate page(s) at the end of the manuscript. Number tables consecutively in accordance with their appearance in the text and place any table notes below
the table body. Figures should be treated similarly.
Format for References
Within the text
In the text cite articles using author's name (without initials) and year of publication (for example "According to Bola (2016)..." or "These have been discussed in previous studies (Tolu, 2004; Akin, 2010)".
All citations in the text should refer to:
- Single author: the author's name (without initials) and the year of publication.
- Two authors: both authors' names and the year of publication;
- Three or more authors: first author's name followed by 'et al.' and the year of publication.
More than one reference from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters 'a', 'b', 'c', etc., placed after the year of publication. Example: Allan (2000a), Allan (2000b).'
Listing
References should be listed first alphabetically and then further sorted chronologically (earliest article first) if necessary.
