The status of adult education in Nigeria

Abstract



This paper is an attempt at highlighting the Status of Adult Education in Nigeria. Although the main thrust of the paper is to explain why and how generally Adult Education has low esteem and status in Nigeria, attempts were made to offer some interpretations of the situation. The paper has also explained the meaning of Status, who is an Adult? What is Adult Education? And advanced several recommendations. Some of the recommendations include: legislation to Finance, protect and guarantee Adult Education programmes; Adult Education and Literacy be linked to development activities and to be responsive to the needs and aspirations of the learners; further research and evaluation of Adult Education are needed to identify effective strategies and programmes that would enhance the status of Adult Education in Nigeria.
