Teacher quality and quantity as correlates of secondary school students' academic performance in Ogun State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated the twin variables of quality and quantity of teachers as correlates of secondary school academic performance in Ogun State of Nigeria between 1997/98 and 2000/2001 academic sessions. The study was conducted ex-post facto under a descriptive survey research design using the proportional to size random sampling technique to select principals of 100 out of the 254 secondary schools in the state. Data on the teachers were collected through the use of the instrument titled: Human Resource Situation Questionnaire (HRSQ) developed by the investigator. The two hypotheses formulated for the study were tested using Pearson's Product Moment Correlation coefficient at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that both the quality and quantity of teachers related significantly with secondary school academic performance in Ogun State of Nigeria. Hence, it was recommended that education authorities should take into consideration both the quality and quantity of teachers, which are posted to secondary schools so that there is no lopsidedness in the distribution.
