Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the effectiveness or otherwise of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy in reducing the level of general and examination anxieties with a view to fostering better academic performance in English Language among students who had failed this subject at least once. Ninety eight students in Senior Secondary School class Two formed the subject of this study. They were randomly distributed into groups (experimental and control groups) after they had responded to three research instruments developed to obtain their pretest scores for the establishment of the baseline. Forty - eight students were in the experimental group while fifty were in the control group. The subjects in the experimental group were exposed to Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy while those in the control group were not. Independent t-test statistical analysis was employed in data analysis and the result showed a stastically significant difference in favour of the experimental group. The counselling implications were highlighted.
