Violence Against Women: Causes, Effects and Challenges to Psychologists.

F A Kalgo

Abstract

Violence against Women is as old as the world itself. It has only now come to the lime light of the Nigerians because of the attention which has shifted to women empowerment. The paper discusses the types of violence against women such as physical, sexual and emotional abuse. It is argued that the causes of violence against women are multifarious but sex-ratio, male chauvinism, change of values, economic harship and legal protection are the major causes. The violence affects the social, physical and psychological well-being of the victims. This poses challenge to Psychologists who should adopt therapeutic measures to rehabilitate the victims.
