Abstract

The paper examined the needs for guidance and counselling services by the staff of academic libraries in Kwara State. Fifty staff randomly selected from five academic libraries responded to items in the researchers-designed “Questionnaire on Needs for Guidance and Counselling Services by Library Staff” (QNGCSLS). Simple frequency counts and Mean rating were used to
analyze the data. The study revealed the main areas in which respondents needed counselling as coping with stress; preparation for retirement and healthy living. Counsellors were not available in most libraries, even, as guidance and counselling services were considered relevant to solve
cognitive, affective and psychomotor – related problems of library staff. The study therefore recommended the establishment of guidance and counselling units in libraries and the employment of professional counsellors to man the units.
