Wireless capsule endoscopy at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital

Abstract

Capsule Endoscopy (CE) is a novel tool that has been demonstrated to be superior to radiologic technique in the evaluation small bowel disorders particularly obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. This service although in use in Western countries is not available in our setting. It has recently been introduced in our hospital and we present our experience, challenges in a case series of five patients M: F=2:3). Their age range were 17 to 62years (mean 42yrs.). The indications were obscure GI bleeding (2), suspected malabsorption (1) and unexplained chronic abdominal pain (3). Examination was complete in three of them with two cases of capsule retention due to an interval colonic cancer and strictured ileum from crohns disease. There were mucosal erosions in one while the remaining two were normal
