Anti-diabetic Potential of the Aqueous Leaf Extracts of Ocimum Gratissimum (Labiatae) and Vernonia Amygdalina Del. (Compositae) in Diabetic–Induced Rabbit

Abstract

The anti-diabetic potential of aqueous extracts of leaves of both Ocimum gratissimum and Vernonia amygdalina were investigated in rabbits. Ten female rabbits were grouped into five groups (1-5) of two rabbits each. Group 1 is the control. Groups (2-5) was alloxan induced diabetic. Group 3 was then
treated with 200mg/kg body wt. Ocimum gratissimum, group 4 was treated with 200mg/kg body wt. Vernonia amygdalina while group 5 was treated with 400mg/kg body wt. of b oth aqueous extracts in ratio 3: 1. The results showed a significant reduction in the plasma glucose in the treated rabbits.
