ANTISPASMODIC ACTIONS OF THE LEAVES OF <i>DANIELLIA OLIVERI</i>

Abstract

The leaves of the plant Daniellia oliveri are usually prescribed traditionally in northern Nigeria for varieties of gastrointestinal complaints. The antispasmodic activity of the n-butanol soluble part of the aqueous portion of the ethanolic extract was evaluated in vitro on isolated guinea pig ileum against three spasmogen; Acetylcholine, Histamine and Barium chloride, and on isolated rabbit jejunum against acetylcholine and Barium chloride. The median inhibitory concentrations of the leaf on agonist were determined. Acute toxicity studies shows that the extract is relatively safe.
