The Use of Surgicel in Middle Ear Surgery

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the usefulness and suitability of surgical in tympanoplasty, as support for large tympanic membrane graft and to find out if any side effect has been associated with its use.

Methodology: Fifteen consecutive patients who had type I tympanoplasty operations between August, 1998 and August, 2003 in E.N. T. Unit of University of Benin Teaching Hospital with the use of surgicel as supporting materials in the middle ear (in the place of Gelfoam) were evaluated for the outcome.

Results There were twelve males and three females. Young aged individuals were more in this study. 40% (20-29yrs), 26.66% (30-39yrs).

There was a take rate of 86.66%, with 66.6% improvement in post tympanoplasty Pure Tone Audio gain with surgicel. No toxic effect was noticed.

Conclusion Surgicel can be used as supporting materials in middle ear surgery as alternative to gelfoam.
