Management of urinary retention in rural areas

Bassey Tom Etuknwa

Abstract

The dearth of adequate manpower and basic health facilities is the hall mark of rural surgical service. The few and often inexperienced junior doctors available, in their practice, often leave behind devastating complications, some of which make future surgeries difficult and sometimes hazardous. The aim of this study is to highlight the problems as are encountered in the management of urinary retention in rural hospitals and then propose a guide-line for their initial management in order to avoid some complications that may make its long term management more difficult.
