Abstract

This study aims to determine the degree of compliance by Nigerian welders with the use of protective goggles and identify the possible hindrance to their usage. Eighty welders out of the 240 that ply their trade in Owo town, Nigeria, were randomly selected and interviewed. The information sought included their general perception of the ocular hazards of welding and awareness of the protective value of the goggles; the frequency of their use of the goggles, and the possible reasons for non-usage. Despite the fact that all the welders interviewed were aware of the ocular protective property of the welders' goggle, only 17.5% of them wore the goggles always. The hindrance to utilization of protective goggles which centers on the welders inadequate appreciation of the constant necessity to wear the goggles during every single welding procedure, can all be rectified by appropriate health education.
