Assessment of Audiovisual Resource in two Selected Medical Libraries in Nigerian Universities: A Case Study

Abstract



BACKGROUND: Access and adequate utilization of information materials is the prime objective of Information Centers. The information resources stacked up without utility negates the objective to which it was meant for. In view of this therefore, the work focused on the use of audiovisual resources preserved in two Medical Libraries in Nigeria, namely, Medical Library College of Medicine of the University of Lagos and Lagos State University College of Medicine Library.

OBJECTIVE : The work attempted to ascertain and assess the relevance of AV resources to the teaching of Medical Studies and determines the frequency of usage as well as identifying attractive variables and the militating factors to their use.

METHODS: The data instrument used was structured questionnaire administered to 200 of the 917 registered Students' population of the two Colleges and the response was 75%. Chi-Square statistical method was used to test the hypothesis formulated.

RESULTS: Results showed that 62% of the students were conversant with AV resources. 48% declared their low knowledge of their use, 26% made effective use and 38% had not been patronizing. 66% strongly agreed that AV could easily facilitate easy understanding of what is learnt in classrooms, whilst 38% agreed. 83% of them were not pleased with the collection of AV resources. Highlighted the attractive factors such as good Environment 92%, Good Human Relations 75%, Prompt Assistance 72%, Quality Collection 89%, Updatedness 91%, and Constant Power Supply 92%.

CONCLUSION: The use of AV resources was not quite impressive due to the Obsoleteness of AV 74%, Crampness of AV room 56% and Power Outage 89%.
