Abstract

A case of dystocia due to foetal arthrogryposis was encountered in a 4-year-old Sokoto Gudali cow from a herd of 15 animals managed under a semi-intensive system. The herd was fed a diet of cereal by-products and grass. Difficult calving was reported 5 hours after the onset of labour, with the calf's limbs appearing at the vulva. Manual traction using obstetrical chains was applied to relieve the dystocia. A gross examination of the dead calf revealed multiple limb curvatures and ankylosis of multiple joints in the fore and hind limbs, kyphosis and scoliosis of the vertebral column affecting the thoraco-lumbar region. A diagnosis of arthrogryposis was made.
Arthrogryposis is a rare congenital condition characterized by joint contractures and muscle weakness, often resulting in dystocia. This case highlights the importance of early detection and prompt intervention in cases of dystocia to prevent complications and safeguarding the future reproductive potential of the dam.
