A Case of Vaginitis In a 2-year-old German Shepherd

Abstract

Vaginitis is the inflammation of the vagina and is caused by a bacterial infection usually transmitted through mating and commonly seen in a year and older bitches. Symptoms include pain, discomfort, vaginal discharge and reluctant to accept natural mating. Diagnosis is usually by microbial culture. A 2-year-old Female German Shepherd, weighing 40 kg, was presented to the Veterinary Clinic of College of Agriculture Akure, with a complaint of fowl smelling whitish discharge from the vagina, loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness and offensive body odor that was noticed after mating. Clinical examination revealed hyperthermia, bloodstained mucoid discharge. Bacterial culture identified Escherichia coli, (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus that were sensitive to Levofloxacin. The bitch was placed on Levofloxacin at 250 mg/kg I.V 5/7 B. complex 0.02 mg/kg and Dexamethasone 40 µg/kg I.M noticeable improvement was observed after a week of treatment, clinical and laboratory examination conducted after two weeks of treatment shows normal results.
