Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide a global overview of the status of nursing research, showing the vast need for the increase in doctorally prepared nurses. There are several trends that influence nursing research, education, and practice and will continue to do so over the next decade. The paper discusses four of these trends: technology, workforce issues, inter-professional education and practice, and the need for more PhD prepared nurses. Finally, the paper concludes with some recommendations to build capacity in nursing research in Africa. After the paper was delivered at the global nursing conference in Kigali, it was followed by a response from Rwanda, to contextualize the paper in the local setting. This response is integrated into this paper.
