The challenges of theological education in Ghana

Abstract

The paper deals with an analysis of the historical trajectory of the evolution of theology in Africa, paying particular attention to the various concerns and influences that have shaped academic theology on the continent and its implication for the mission of the church in Africa. On the basis of this analysis a proposal in the form of theology of transformation is made to deal essentially with what appears to be gap between academic theology and the concerns of the people in the pews. The paper argues that bridging the gap between academia and the pew entails a radical rearrangement of the focus and orientation of theological education in Africa.

Cet article étudie la trajectoire historique de l'évolution théologique en Afrique. Il porte un regard particulier sur divers enjeux et facteurs qui ont marqué la théologie académique sur le continent ainsi que ses implications pour la mission de l'église en Afrique. Sur les bases de cette analyse se formule la proposition d’une théologie de transformation appelée essentiellement à régler le problème de ce qui paraît être l’écart entre la théologie académique et les soucis de l’assemblée des fidèles. L’article soutient que le projet de combler la lacune entre le monde universitaire et les fidèles assis sur les bancs d’église passe par
la reconfiguration radicale des priorités et de l’orientation de l’éducation
théologique en Afrique.
