Abstract

"Material goods tell a story"
A considerable volume of knowledge about the past can be gained from artefacts and material goods. Such objects, like documentary sources, are signifi cant evidence of times gone by, of events and people involved. In this article the story of two objects is told. One is a beacon stone which gives information on the growth of stock farming at the Cape, the meat contract and colonial rivalry. Then follows the story of a State Bible (the authorized version of the Netherland’s States General) on the pulpit of the Groote Kerk in Cape Town. Anton Anreith, the sculptor with his masterpiece, also figures in the story.

Heelwat kennis uit die verlede kan uit artefakte en materiële voorwerpe opgedoen word. Sodanige voorwerpe is, soos dokumentêre bronne, betekenisvolle bewysstukke van vervloë tye en gebeurtenisse en mense wat daarby betrokke was. In dié artikel word die verhaal van twee voorwerpe vertel. Die een aspek handel oor ’n bakensteen met inligting oor die uitbreiding van die veeboerdery aan die Kaap, die vleiskontrak
en koloniale mededinging. Tweedens handel dit oor die Statebybel op die kansel van die Groote Kerk in Kaapstad. Anton Anreith, die beeldhouer en sy meesterstuk kom ook in die prentjie.
