Weaving Science into Creative Writing: Integrating interdisciplinarity into young adult learning
Abstract
Science education and science communication, driven by their shared overarching objectives of awareness, engagement, and comprehension, have gained further potency through the integration of creative forms of expression. Creative methods of expression, particularly creative writing, can make science accessible, relatable, and engaging, which helps promote a scientifically enlightened society. The weaving of scientific concepts and creative writing is crucial in addressing global issues such as climate change. This study investigates the impact of a 12-week science-focused creative writing workshop held in Bangalore, India. The study pays attention to how participants creatively expressed their expanded understanding of the role of carbon and carbon dioxide emissions in influencing climate change. In this qualitative study, we utilised a multi-method approach, which allows for the use of open-ended surveys, assessment of the produced works, and self-assessment processes as ways of gaining insight into how the workshop has inspired participants to integrate science concepts into diverse creative writing genres. The findings demonstrate an integration of scientific literacy with imaginative expression, emphasising creative writing as an alternative way for learners to connect science to their life experiences.
