Abstract

Alloxan and streptozotocin were used to cause beta cell lysis in vervet monkeys used as recipient models for pancreatic allografts. Tests were performed on these animals to evaluate the effect of the drugs on carbohydrate metabolism. Streptozotocin is preferred as the drug of choice in creating a non-pancreatectomised hyperglycaemic recipient for pancreatic allografting.
