Abstract

A 61-year-old White male presented with a 6-weeks history of febrile diarrhoea, followed by progressive weakness. On examination he was pyrexial with retarded cerebration, general muscular atrophy, areflexia and patchy hypo-aesthesia of the extremities. He developed progressive respiratory failure, and died on the sixth day in spite of assisted respiration. Necropsy showed diffusely infiltrating malignant lymphoma, of poorly differentiated histiocytic type. No demyelinisation was noted, but a degree of lymphomatous peripheral nerve involvement was demonstrated. Although lymphoma may cause a variety of neurological complications, progressive peripheral neuropathy is very unusual.
