A simple method for plasma progesterone measurement

Abstract

A simple, rapid, non-chromatographic method for the assay of progesterone in human peripheral plasma is presented. A single petroleum ether extract of plasma is partitioned twice with 28% aqueous ethanol, and progesterone is then measured by a competitive proteinbinding assay using plasma from women receiving high oestrogen oral contraception. Reliability criteria of the method have been evaluated, and have shown the assay to be satisfactory for the measurement of plasma progesterone in the luteal phase of the menstrual cyde.
