A model to determine the theoretical maximum feed speed of a frame saw

C.B Wessels

Abstract

The frame saw is a popular primary and secondary log breakdown saw in South Africa. In this study a theoretical model for estimating the maximum feed speed of a frame saw is derived. Contrary to earlier models, the actual blade speed is used as a variable in the derivation. The chip holding capacity of the saw gullet is used as the limiting factor for feed speed. The model was evaluated in a trial at an industrial saw mill. The results from the sawing variation trial support the validity of the model. In the case where the feed speed was above the calculated theoretical maximum value, sawing variation increased significantly.
