Abstract

Objectives The aim of this study is to determine the level of serum testosterone among infertile ladies and to assess its role in female infertility.
Materials and Methods A case-controlled study of 150 Sudanese ladies suffering from infertility was compared to 50 fertile subjects as a control group with a mean age of 31 years. Serum samples were collected and testosterone level measured using ELISA methods.
Results The (mean }SD) serum testosterone level in fertile group was 364 } 0.17 ng/l, while among infertile subjects, serum testosterone level was -82 } 0.57 ng/l. The difference between the two groups is statistically significant (P<0.05). Difference in serum testosterone level between infertile ladies with irregular and those with regular cycle, was statistically not significant (P . 0.05). No correlation was detected between serum testosterone level with age and duration of infertility. Conclusion Testosterone level in infertile ladies was found to be significantly increased compared to its level in infertile subjects (mainly in irregular menstrual cycle). Age and duration of infertility have no effect on testosterone level.
