Human Values and the Quest for Sustainable Ideology in Africa

SN Agu

Abstract

This paper draws attention to the correlation between human values and sustainable ideology. The aim here is to highlight the indispensability and centrality of human values to any meaningful search for an enduring ideology in African states. To this end, the paper argues that the quest for sustainable ideology in Africa can hardly be realized unless predicated on human values. It does this by analyzing the theoretical and empirical foundation of both concepts. It contends that the failure to realize and explore the mutual link between human values and ideology largely accounts for the orgy of conflicts and wars in Africa. The paper therefore concludes that the African predicament can only be reversed when African states appreciate, explore and predicate their ideologies on those values that promote, rather than undermine human dignity and worth.
