Ecclesiology in the context of liberation theology

LU Ogbonnaya

Abstract

This paper focuses on the concept of ecclesiology as viewed by liberation theology. It argues that the doctrine of church as conceived by liberation theology is deeply influenced by the thesis of liberation theology, which is rooted in the liberation or emancipation of the oppressed and marginalized in the society. This doctrine asserts that the church is the church of the oppressed, by the oppressed and for the oppressed. It goes further to assert that by the church taking side with the oppressed it is also fostering oppression which it seeks to turn down. This is because liberation theology does not see the oppressors as part of the church that stands in need of liberation. Hence, the position of this paper is that the church should work as a body of justice and promote equality, avoiding every form of oppression. This will enable the church fulfil its essence of existence.
