Indications for evisceration and enucleation of the eye at Ilorin, Nigeria: a ten– review

Abstract

In the period, 1990-1999, 92 eyes that underwent evisceration / enucleation at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Nigeria were reviewed retrospectively. Males were mostly affected with a male / female ratio of 2.8:1. The most common procedure done was evisceration in 85.9% of the cases. Enucleation was done mostly for tumours (14.1%), while the indications for evisceration included ruptured eyeball (29.3%), Panophthalmitis (27.2%), and painful blind eyes (16.3%). Trauma and corneal pathology from Vitamin A deficiency and measles keratitis were of great significance leading to the different indications for the evisceration procedure. Individuals below 20 years and those over 50 years were affected in 44.6% and 34.8% of the times respectively. The role of prevention is emphasized.
