Pharmacological management of Alzheimer's and related dementias: alternatives to orthodox approach

Abstract

Background: Current treatment approaches in dementia lie on the use of cholinergic transmission enhancers. In recent times, herbal products have become popular in dementia and other chronic diseases treatment.

Objective and Design: To review currently available (locally and internationally) herbal preparation and their use in dementia treatment.

Methods and Results: Information on herbal products uses internationally and locally were sourced through 3 directions, online Medline/ plumed search. Internet (with appropriate keywords-Herbal products, chronic disease treatment, Dementia treatment) and locally published literature search.

Discussion: The findings were then presented, reviewed and discussed vis-a vis the provision of best practice.

Conclusion: Research and Scientist should look intently at herbal preparation as potential alternative and combinations to dementia treatment.
