Genital tract microbial floral hysterosalpingography

Abstract

Objective: To study the endocervical/high vaginal microbial flora with a view to establishing the common endocervical/HVS microbial flora at Hysterosalpingography.

Method: A swab was take from vagina and endocervical canal, after which the cervical and uterus were sounded for position and direction of uterine cavity. The swab sent for microbial analysis using wet and gram stains and culture methods. The HSG procedure was then continued to conclusion. The contrast of choice is meglumin sodium diatrozate Uronthods 76%.

Results: 30 patients were referred to the department of Radiology from various clinics within the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching complex for problem of infertility between June and December 1998. The patients were aged between 21 and 30 years with a mean age of 23.2. 13 (43.3%) came with primary infertility, while 17 (56.6%) were referred for secondary infertility. The mean duration of infertility in years was 3.3. 47.8% of the patients had bilateral free peritoneal spillage and 52.2% had tubal block bilateral or unilateral high vaginal swab yielded yeast cells. Trichomonas vaginalis and white blood cells, Pseudomonas aerigeniosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.
