Comparison of pipette and vagina swab methods for evaluation of vagina cytology in Sprague Dawley rat

Abstract

This study was carried out to compare the smear prepared from vaginal cells obtained by pipette and swab methods. Vaginal cells were obtained from five Sprague Dawley rats using either the pipette or vaginal swab methods and thereafter stained with giemsa and viewed under the light microscope. The cells viewed in the smears prepared from both methods of collection were typical nucleated non-cornified whereas the cells in the smear prepared from pipette method stained better and were more than that obtained from the swab method.
