Critical consideration of measures to curb the use of sexual violence in armed conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Nkosingiphile Mkhize

Abstract

The main objective of this article is to provide insight on measures that international organisations have used to mitigate sexual violence in armed conflict in their context, and how these can be used to ameliorate mitigation efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Therefore, the article considers various measures that the African Union and the European Union have formulated and implemented. The article found that there are various reasons why sexual violence in armed conflict takes place in any nation-state or part of it. This article argues that such acts or beliefs are morally unacceptable and should not be overlooked. The eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is no exception to this and should relentlessly work on mitigating this devastating reality. The research approach of this article is qualitative in nature.
